Harvey Visits the Doctor
Note to Parents: Talk with your child about what to expect at their next doctor or dentist visit. Predictability reduces fear.
Story
Hi, I’m Harvey. Tomorrow, I’m going to see my doctor. I already brushed my teeth and packed my favorite bandana to wear. I like to look my best when I have an important visit. Sometimes, when I think about going to the doctor, my tummy feels a little twisty. Do you ever feel that way too? My mom says it’s normal to feel a little nervous before something new. She also says my doctor helps keep me strong and healthy, so I can keep doing all the things I love—like running and wagging and playing fetch. At my last visit, the doctor checked my heartbeat—thump-thump, thumpthump—and smiled. She said it sounded strong, like a drum! Then she looked in my ears, my eyes, and my mouth. I even got a tiny vaccine to help keep me safe from germs. I didn’t love the poke, but I was brave. I held still, took a deep breath, and it was over before I could count to three. Afterward, the doctor gave me a sticker and said I did great. I wagged my tail all the way home. So tonight, as I lie in bed, I’m reminding myself that tomorrow’s visit will help me stay healthy. I’ll be brave, kind, and curious—just like last time. Good night, stars. Good night, tomorrow. Harvey’s ready to shine.
